On Monday, May 20, 2013 a huge and powerful tornado rated at EF4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with winds up to 200 miles per hour, struck the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore causing massive destruction.

At least fifty-one people were confirmed dead, twenty to thirty school children were still missing and feared dead beneath the rubble while lots of people were injured.

A spokeswoman for the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center said that the devastating, mile-wide tornado touched down at 3:01 p.m. local time (4.01 p.m. EDT).

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, Oklahoma, the tornado was on the ground for approximately 40 minutes, and a tornado warning was in effect for 16 minutes before the twister developed.

It was reported that the devastated area covered thirty square miles and some area look like a war-zone with blocks of houses, buildings, farms, trees and other structures were knocked down by the tornado.

The mayor of Moore, Glenn Lewis told NBC:

“The whole city looks like a debris field. It looks like we have lost our hospital. I drove by there a while ago and it’s pretty much destroyed.”

Blocks of homes were leveled by the powerful tornado, cars piled atop one another and some buildings were on fire.

Among the buildings destroyed were the Plaza Towers Elementary school and Briarwood Elementary School while Moore Medical Center sustained significant damage.

Most of the injured were brought to the Integris Southwest Medical Center, University of Oklahoma Medical Center, St. Anthony Healthplex South and Midwest Regional.

The National Weather Service predicted a 10 percent chance of tornadoes in parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois.

It also said parts of Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and Iowa have a 5 percent risk of tornadoes.

The area at greatest risk includes Joplin, which on Wednesday will mark two years since the tornado that killed 161 people.

On Sunday, tornadoes killed two people and injured 39 in Oklahoma.

In Photos: Severe Storms Hit Midwest, Deep South Killed 3

Tornadoes and very strong winds peel the roofs from homes in the Deep South and heaped snow and ice on the Midwest.

Golf-ball and baseball-sized hail pelted parts of Georgia and the Carolinas late Thursday and early Friday.

Three people were killed.

Second Winter Storm Battered Central US In A Week

The second round of heavy snow in a week that battered the Plains of Midwest had killed at least three people.

AP reported that about 80,000 homes and businesses in northwest Missouri, northeast Kansas and western Oklahoma lost power.

All highways in the Panhandle was closed by the of the Oklohama Highway Patrol because of blizzard conditions.

Dozens of motorist were stranded or have to abandoned their vehicles.

High winds made the situation even worse.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- An official said 14 people have been confirmed as injured in the Kansas City gas explosion fire. The suspected gas explosion sparked a massive fire that engulfed an entire block at an upscale shopping center in Kansas City. Kansas City Manager Troy Schulte says officials don't yet know if anyone was killed in the explosion, which destroyed JJ's restaurant. Authorities also are still trying to determine the full cause of the blast. Schulte says they do know there was a gas leak followed by an explosion. At this point, he says authorities believe it may have stemmed from an accident involving a utility contractor. Earlier police spokeswoman Rhonda Flores said it appeared that a car crashed into a gas main near JJ's just after 6 p.m. Kerry O'Connor, a spokeswoman for St. Luke's Hospital, which is near the scene of the fire, said several patients were on the way to the hospital. She said they haven't been assessed yet but "they appear to be critical at this time." Fire officials didn't immediately return a phone call seeking comment Tuesday evening. The, but television video showed flames shooting out of the Country Club Plaza. The smell of gas was very strong near the area long after the suspected explosion. Video showed dozens of firefighters and other emergency responders battling a massive blaze that appeared to have engulfed an entire block, with flames burning through the roofs. Black smoke swirled in the air and debris littered surrounding streets. The shopping area was established in 1922 by J.C. Nichols. The shopping area was established in 1922 by J.C. Nichols. Based on the architecture of Seville, Spain, it includes retail, restaurants, apartments and offices.

A natural gas leak cause a massive explosion that started a massive fire in Kansas City, Missouri on Tuesday evening, which completely destroyed a popular steakhouse and fine dining restaurant called JJ’s.

The explosion shook the Country Club Plaza, an upscale shopping area about 30 blocks south of downtown Kansas City, just after 6 p.m. CST (0000 GMT)

At least sixteen people were injured, three of them listed in critical condition.

They were taken to University of Kansas Hospital, St. Luke’s Medical Center, Research Medical Center and Truman Medical Center.

Anyway it is still unclear how many people were inside the restaurant at the time of the blast and if there are more victims inside the damaged building.

Kansas City Fire Chief Paul Berardi said cadaver dogs were called to the scene to help serch the area for victims.

Officials said that the precise origin of the blast was not immediately known.

Associated Press (AP) reported that, “City Manager Troy Schulte said it appeared an accident by a utility contractor had caused the blast, and a statement from utility Missouri Gas Energy late Tuesday reiterated that possibility, but Berardi and others cautioned that the cause was still being investigated.”

Earlier police spokeswoman Rhonda Flores said it appeared that a car crashed into a gas main near JJ’s just after 6 p.m..

AP said that the smell of gas remained very strong near the area long after the explosion.

This is a disaster.
