Photos: Deadly Hurricane Irma To Hit Florida After Hitting Caribbean

After the Category 5 Hurricane Irma made its landfall in the Caribbean with 175 mph sustained winds, Hurricane Irma is expected to make a landfall in South Florida this weekend.

NBC News reported that at least 12 people were killed due to the hurricane that had caused vast devastation in the Caribbean islands.

Florida is braced for a possible direct hit that could cause a devastating damage to the southern part of the state.

CNN reported that the National Hurricane Center said Irma will make landfall in southern Florida as a dangerous major hurricane and has issued hurricane and storm surge warnings for South Florida including from Jupiter Inlet on the east coast of the state and southward around the Florida Peninsula to Bonita Beach on the west coast.

The warning included the Florida Keys, Lake Okeechobee, and Florida Bay. 

NBC News also wrote that the National Weather Service said that “locations may be uninhabitable for weeks or months” due to extreme winds, adding that “structural damage to buildings, with many washing away” was possible in some coastal areas.

Hurricane Irma is one of the strongest Atlantic storms ever recorded as it caused massive destruction to multiple places including Barbuda, Puerto Rico, Turks, Caicos and others.

Last two months, Texas was hit by the deadly Category 4 Hurricane Harvey, that caused immense damage and catastrophic flooding, and also killed at least 70 people.

About three hours after Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas as a Category 4 storm, it was downgraded to a Category 3 storm as it made a second landfall on the northeastern shore of Copano Bay after winds decreased to 125 mph from maximum sustained winds of 130 mph.

Earlier, the National Hurricane Center said the Category 4 Hurricane Harvey made landfall Friday night on the Texas coast between Port Aransas and Port O’Connor at around 10 pm local , with very strong winds of 130 mph, bringing up to 13 feet of storm surge, large, destructive waves and very heavy rain.

At the time, the storm’s eye was 30 miles away from the coastal city of Corpus Christi, Texas causing power outrages in the city and nearby towns.

Harvey is the first Category 4 hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Hurricane Charley hit Florida in 2004.

 

Forecasters predicted that the slow-moving storm will dump heavy rain on South Texas and parts of Louisiana until the middle of next week, where some places could receive as much as 40 inches.

 

Catastrophic flooding is expected, including in inland areas as river water levels rise.

A Car Clashed Into Florida Day Care, 1 Killed

A child was killed after a car crashed into KinderCare Learning Center in Winter Park, Orlando, Florida after it was rear-ended by a silver Dodge Durango on Wednesday.

The Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children did not release the gender and age of victim.

Another 14 people were injured, most of them are children.

Cindy Williams, a spokeswoman for the Florida Highway Patrol said, “The condition of several of the injured was “very, very serious”.

The Dodge Durango which fled the scene was later found parked at an Orlando area home and police is now looking for the driver.

Overnight sprinkler are usually used during freezing nights in Florida to protect the plants, fruits and trees from the extreme weather.

And a part of the results is stunning icicles like shinning, beautiful decorations hanging from the plants and trees.

Florida Man Swallowed By Sinkhole Feared Dead

A man feared dead after he was swallowed by a sinkhole in his suburban Tampa home in Seffner, Florida.

Reuters reported that Jeff Bush, 37, was in his bedroom Thursday night when the sinkhole suddenly swallowed him and the entire bedroom into the ground.

The sinkhole was estimated 20 feet across and 20 feet deep.

It caused the home’s concrete floor to cave in around 11 p.m. Thursday.

Fortunately five other people in the house were unharmed.

Bush’s brother Jeremy Bush jumped into the hole and tried to dig to find his brother but he could not find him.

He was rescued by Douglas Duvall of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office who pulled him out from the sinkhole.

The sinkhole is slowly growing and it was feared that the entire house could eventually falls into the unstable ground.

Engineers said the house may have to be demolished, even though from the outside the house seems to be alright.

They took soil samples and ran various tests and found that the entire lot was dangerous.

Reuters reported that,”Authorities had not detected any signs of life after lowering listening devices and cameras into the hole and rescue efforts were suspended after the site was deemed too unsafe for emergency personnel to enter”.

Two adjacent houses were evacuated and officials were considering further evacuations.

“This is not your typical sinkhole,” said Hillsborough County administrator Mike Merrill.

Florida is highly prone to sinkholes because there are caverns below ground of limestone, a porous rock that easily dissolves in water.

This is a disaster.
